Your Fall Heating Checklist

Fall is just around the corner and that means winter’s not far behind. Will you be prepared when the cold weather comes to Markham? Make sure your heating system is up to the task with this handy home heating checklist.
  • Filters- Change your filters at the first sign of fall and then once every two months during the winter. If you’ve got a dirty filter the furnace will have to work harder to heat your home, which means higher energy costs for you.
  • Thermostat- Check the batteries in your thermostat and then make sure it’s giving you an accurate reading. If it’s not, you could end up shivering all winter or heating your home more than necessary.
  • Flue- Check the flue for signs of corrosion, rust or soot. Leaks in the flue can be dangerous and require professional attention. Give Summers and Smith Cooling & Heating a call and one of our skilled technicians will ensure you can warm your home safely this winter.
  • Vents- Air vents should be open and free from debris at all times. Make sure indoor vents aren’t covered by carpets or furniture and check your outdoor vents for leaves, dirt, debris and nesting animals.
  • Heat exchanger- If your heat exchanger is cracked or showing other signs of deterioration, you’ll want to schedule a service visit from a reputable Markham heating company like Summers and Smith Cooling & Heating right away.
  • Burners- Clean the burner. A dirty burner is hard on the furnace and over time the accumulation of dirt and grime could take years off its life.
  • Pilot assembly- The dirtier the pilot, the more likely it will accidently go out. Clean the pilot and the assembly so your furnace doesn’t inadvertently shut down in the middle of winter.
  • Lubrication- Fall is a great time to apply lubricant to your furnace’s motor, the bearings and other moving parts.
  • Electrical- Tighten all electrical connections so that your furnace is operating safely. A loose connection not only poses a safety hazard but can also cause your system to shut down or run less efficiently.
  • Fire it up- Don’t wait until it’s freezing outside to check if your heating actually works. Turn it on now so you’ll be ready for winter. If it doesn’t work, beat the rush and call Summers and Smith Cooling & Heating today.
